Why JEE Exists
The Joint Entrance Examination is the gateway to the most prestigious engineering institutions in India.
- JEE Main – Qualifies candidates for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and is the eligibility filter for JEE Advanced.
- JEE Advanced – The only route to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and a few other institutes.
Together they form the most competitive undergraduate engineering entrance system in the country.
Exam Pattern Overview
JEE Main (Paper 1 – B.E./B.Tech)
- Mode: Computer Based Test
- Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
- Total questions: 90 (30 per subject)
- Questions to attempt: 75 (25 per subject)
- Marking: +4 for correct, −1 for incorrect (MCQ & numerical)
- Total marks: 300
- Duration: 3 hours
JEE Advanced
- Two compulsory papers (Paper 1 & Paper 2)
- Each paper: 3 hours
- Mixed question types: single correct, multiple correct, numerical, matching, etc.
- Marking scheme varies by paper and year
- Both papers must be attempted
- Total marks typically around 360 (varies)
